Labor Day Lunch at Clyde's #Clydes # Schnitzel #cremebrulee

I missed celebrating my daughter's birthday due a conflict in our work schedule.  Fortunately, we had time on Labor Day for a lunch.  We planned for days for the right restaurant.  Unfortunately,  our first choice was closed for the holiday.  We decided to go to Clyde's in downtown Washington, DC.

It was my first time at Clyde's but not my daughter's.  I instantly loved the interior.  It was not busy since it was the holiday and early (12PM) affording us the opportunity to be seated and waited on immediately.  The waiter was a little crisp but I did not allow that to spoil my experience.

We scanned the generosity menu and ordered a nachos appetizer.  While we waited, we decided on our entrée.  My daughter opted for a bacon cheese burger.  I felt a little more daring.  I spotted a pork Schnitzel on the menu and had to have it.  I love German food and schnitzel is one of my favorite.  A schnitzel is thinly pounded meat coated in flour, beaten eggs and bread crumbs and then gently fried.  It was served with spätzle and red cabbage.  I substituted the spätzle for mashed
potatoes.

We ate all of the nachos and of course we were full by the time our entrees arrived.   I had to taste the schnitzel.  It was huge and covered with brown mushroom gravy.  I actually never had it with gravy.  I was that there wasn't so much gravy that caused the schnitzel to become soggy.  I cut into the schnitzel and noticed how thinly pounded it was and the ratio of meat to coating.  A lot of coating in my opinion.  I took a bite crunching into the coating.  The flavor was good but not as good of many others I had.  The coating over powered the meat and it lacked the slight lemony flavor that I associate with schnitzel.   I took another bite of it with the mash potatoes and cabbage.  I hated the cabbage but decided to take the all of it home for lunch the next day minus the cabbage.

Although still full, I needed dessert.  I spotted another one of my favorites - crème brulee.  I ordered it.  It arrived nicely prepared.  I dug in and took my first bite.  I was disappointed that the crème brulee was cold.  It would of been so much better if they had just warmed the sugar prior to serving.  It really would have enhanced the flavor.  Nevertheless, I ate it all.

I loved my experience at Clyde's but I think I will select other items to ordered.  I feel they did not do justice to schnitzel or the crème brulee.  I guess I will stick with ordering an American entrée and dessert.
