Large Onion Rings and Containers for Millennials

MD and I have been planning to meet for lunch for a very long time.  However, life is always getting in our way.  After several months, we agreed to meet at a new restaurant in the Brookland neighborhood of DC called Brookland's Finest.  I was excited.  I truly believe in supporting my local businesses.

I arrived first at the appointed time.  I should of known that MD would be late.  She is always late.  She arrived half hour after I did.  The restaurant was filled with young families with children and young adults watching sports on the large television screens.  Thankfully, we were seated immediately because I was starving.  MD was starving too.  We ordered fruity Bellinis and surveyed the menu.  All the items looked interested but not overly exciting.  I decided on the tempura onion rings as an appetizer.  MD wanted the same.  The waitress mentioned that the four onion rings were very large.  We may want to share.  I love onion rings and did not want to share.  We order two orders.  I further ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT sandwich made with a portabello mushroom, spinach, fried green tomatoes, parmesan cheese on a brioche roll and served with hand cut French fries.  MD ordered the soup of the day and the heirloom tomato salad.

Our onion rings appetizers arrived first.  The onions rings were piping hot and HUGE - at least 5 inches across.  The waitress was right, we could have shared.  However, biting into to them, it was more batter than onions.  Further, both MD and I agreed as the onion rings cooled, they became distasteful.  We both left two rings untouched.  In my opinion, big is not better not unless it means more onions in the rings.

Our entrée arrived and was presented beautifully.  MD loved the taste of  her soup and the tomato heirloom salad both of which I had little interest in ordering.  Truthfully I hated my sandwich but loved the French fries.  The portabello mushroom was tough and the fried green tomato lacked flavor.  In fact, the sandwich fell apart.  I had to eat each item separately.  I left most of the portabello mushroom behind.  I wished I had ordered something else.  Perhaps, I should of had the soup and salad.

We ended our meal with dessert.  I stayed safe with a lime sorbet.  MD had the cannoli.  We both enjoyed our desserts.  We vowed to come again and try other items.  MD ordered a carryout container to take her cannoli home.  The waitress delivered it to our table.  MD tried unsuccessfully to close the container.  I also tried to close it.  The container was not user friendly.  We kept trying.  Finally we called over a waiter to assist us.  It took him only a few seconds to line up the notches to close the box.  We left shortly afterwards, laughing that the carryout containers at Brookland's Finest were made for millennials.
