Jimmies of Savin Rock in West Haven, Connecticut - one of my childhood seafood paradises

I always look forward to lunch at Jimmies www.jimmiesofsavinrock.com   in West Haven when I am in Connecticut.  I love looking out on Long Island Sound watching the couples walking hand and hand and people with children and dogs walking along the beach.  The boats ride the waves in the distance while the seagulls hover above scanning the ground waiting for any morsel of food.   In the distance, across the sound, sits Long Island, NY which is visible on a clear day.   I had traveled 300 miles by train from Washington, DC in anticipation of  the breathtaking view, the succulent seafood, and sharing memories of this location from my childhood.  So, as my birthday approached, I choose to go to Jimmies with my sister and my daughter for lunch.  The weather was great with clear skies and my appetite was ferocious.

I should of know something was up when my sister received a call about a hour before out lunch time from my niece-in-law D.  My sister told D  that the time for lunch was 12 PM.  Still, I hoped I was mistaken.  I was looking forward to s quiet lunch with my favorite foods and  looking out on the Sound.   However, when we arrived, my sister told the waitress "table for 6:".  My heart dropped. Who are these 6 people?  The waitress escorted us to an inside table but when I complained we were seated at a corner booth for 6 with a partial view of the Sound.  I had to strain my neck just to see the water.

My vision of an ideal lunch faded.  I asked my sister who will be joining us.  She smiled and said cousin C, her friend A, and D.  Frankly, I just was not feeling it.  We sat and ordered our birch beers and surveyed the menu.  Five minutes later, my cousin C, her friend A and A's sister arrived.  My sister did not know about 'As sister.  Our table for 6 was too small.  The group of three were seated adjacent to us. However, since it was a different table, they had a different waitress.   They immediately ordered while we waited for D.

We waited respectfully for D who arrived 20 minutes later before ordering.  Meanwhile, the table of three food had arrived.  I almost ate my cousin's C stuffed shrimp. We ordered immediately upon D's arrival.  Our appetizer was gently fried shoe string onion rings.  My daughter ordered crab and corn chowder, fried shrimp, fries, and a salad.  I ordered a lobster roll, fries and salad.  My sister ordered fried whole belly clams, fries and coleslaw.  D ordered fried scallops, baked potato, and salad.  The food arrived looking and smelling delicious.

The table of 3 were just about finish when our food arrived.  We managed to keep a simple conversation going in spite of the logistics.  However, it felt to me  as if we were not a group of 7.  We could of just been friends that happened to be in the same location at the same time.  I wanted to enjoy the ambience and great seafood.  The others only wanted the food and to move on to the next place on their list.  There was no lingering and reminiscing.

My lunch was a bust.  Although I enjoyed all the invites socially, I really did not want them at my lunch.  I really just wanted to spend time with my daughter and my sister.  The meal lost all its luster.  I ate all of the amazing onion rings.  However, I left my salad and took home more than half my lobster roll and fries.  I even left most of my 'treasured' birch beer.  I never saw Long Island, NY due to the angle of my seat.   To make matters worse, I had to pay for my own birthday lunch!
