Philadelphia and Fish Tacos

Martin Luther King Birthday weekend  2014 was my family's time to celebration the Christmas holiday.  Several of my folks met in Philadelphia from Connecticut and Washington, DC.  We arrived sunny Friday afternoon and departed snowy Tuesday afternoon,

Saturday, after an exciting and thrilling day at the Mutter museum (www.collegeofphysicians.org/mutter-museum/) we were very hungry.   You would think after seeing all those skulls and other body parts we would not have an appetite.  Wrong!  My folks were starving.  However, like other large groups of people, deciding where to eat was a challenge.  We walked and walked. up and down Market Street. We just could not agree.  We looked at menus in the windows as we walked by.  According to my folks, the restaurants were too expensive, too ordinary, too crowd or just too boring.  I thought I would never eat.  I was cold;  and could eat almost any where.

Finally, after freezing my butt off, we decided on basic boring Fridays.  I am sure it was because everybody was so cold and hungry that they became less picky.  It was not my favorite place but I made the best of a bad situation.  We did get a great corner location with several tables which afforded us the opportunity to watch people on two streets  And watch we did, making us stories about the people as they busily went about their day to day activities.

Since we were so hungry, we started with appetizers and the salad bar.  Most of the appetizers were routine except the shrimp fondue.  I love shrimp and I love cheese.  Together, it could not be too bad.  It was w-on-d-e-r-f u l.  I am sure it was so good partially because I was so hungry.  Frankly when it arrived bubbling and hot,  my folks and I did not care we were in a public place.  We ate like a savages.  Dripping cheese was all over our fingers and, in my case, my face.  Thank goodness there were plenty of napkins.

Our entrees, on the other hand, seem basic and lackluster except mine.  I was in Philly and I was going to move from basic to something out of the box.  So I ordered fish tacos. I had never had them before.  I had seem them on cooking shows and they seem delicious.  In fact, California is known for fish tacos.  When I ordered them, my folks gave me such a look but said nothing.

My two fish tacos in soft taco shells, to my surprise,  came  already covered with taco trimmings - lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa and sour cream.,  arrived shortly  after eating the appetizer and the salad.  I was a little disappointed.  I wanted to add my own trimmings.  The tacos went down quick and easy.  In fact, much to quick and easy.  I was finish in a few minutes.  Meanwhile my  folks dined on juicy steaks, hamburgers, and chicken with all the sides.

I watched my folk finish their meal as I sipped water and looked at my empty plate with only memories of fish tacos.  My fish tacos were GONE and I was still hungry.  My folks were bursting so much at the seams with food that they could barely walk.  I,  on the other hand, was light as a feather.  In fact, by the time I got back to the hotel, I forgot I ate the fish tacos. My folks, to add insult to injury, ran pass me to put their leftovers in the refrigerator..
