In The Nassau Bahamas Drink and Eat.........
Have you ever been to the Bahamas? I have been lucky enough to travel there several times. I make it a high priority while there to, of course, dine and ...eat. This time it was a little different due to a recent hurricane. The island was severe damaged by the storm and many of the small quaint restaurants were closed. It took me a little while to find the right restaurant off the beaten path. But thanks to great marketing by the restaurant who had marketers with menus soliciting to tourists and directing them to the location blocks away from the hustle and bustle, I found the right spot. I took the bait!
I arrived at Couch N Kalik Bar and Grill. It offered both outdoor and indoor dining. I sat inside at a table near the window. The menu offered a great selection of foods and drinks. I started my meal with the local drink called Sky Juice. I had heard a lot about it but never tried it. A large whitish beverage arrived that I learned was made with gin, coconut water, and sweet condensed milk. Now, I am not really a gin drinker. But I took a sip, and loved it. I found a new favorite. I just couldn't have too many of them. Two was more than enough.
I skipped the traditional couch fritters. I had them before elsewhere and did not find them enjoyable. I ordered instead, a grouper fish sandwich with mac and cheese. I had never had grouper but it seems like a good option. It arrived heavily battered with lettuce and tomato which made the batter soggy. I removed the batter and ate it without it. It was tasty but not great. The mac was good but not the rich flavorful variety that I am used to from the USA. It was creamy and cheesy but not baked like I liked it. I did clean the plate. However, I did leave some of the fish.
I loved the experience. It was a good lunch just not great. However, I was glad I tried something new. So with all that in mind, I would recommend that everybody try the Sky Juice and have the group sandwich. Just drink slowly. And, ask for your sandwich not to be dressed. Have the lettuce and tomatoes on the side in order to keep the fish crispy. And, if your daring, get the whole fish with the head and bones. The crew from one of the cruise ordered it and it looked and smelled wonderful. They cleaned it to the bones. As for their mac and cheese, you will be disappointed if you like it baked like me. Stay with traditional sides. The Bahamas are not known for mac and cheese!
