Philly's Restaurant Just To Serve You
I love to travel and Philadelphia is one of my nearby favorites. I consider Philly a day trip since it's only three hours away from DC. It helps to have friends in the city so I take my time to venture in and discover new culinary venues off the beating path. That is how I discovered - Just To Serve You Restaurant. I must say I was a little skeptical when it was recommended. I am not real big on soul food especially at a carryout. But my friends assured me, it was more than a carryout. The food is cooked to order. I smiled and check the website. The menu that was posted seemed diverse and tasty. We pulled in front of the restaurant on Girard Avenue (they have another location on 5th Street).
Although the place was crowded, my eyes were drawn upon entering to the huge display of desserts in the chiller - carrot cake, pound cake, red velvet, chocolate butter cream, pineapple coconut cake, chocolate cake, sweet potato pie and more. There were so many desserts they had to place them in several chillers. And, the slices were enormous! I selected a slice of pineapple coconut cake even before looking at the menu. I really could of just stopped with the desserts.
I scanned the large menu trying to match my taste buds to all the great items on the menu. I thought about ribs. I love ribs but I was uncertain. I am too particular about my ribs. I also thought about the lobster mac and cheese, but who would order that at a carryout. Most of my friends ordered the basics - fried fish, fried shrimp, and fried chicken wings. However, one friend ordered jerk chicken which I was surprised to see on the menu. Another friend wanted the beef short ribs or the shepherds pie. But unfortunately they were both sold out. She settled for turkey meatloaf instead of beef meatloaf. Since you can get breakfast all day long, another friend ordered pancakes for her granddaughter. I ordered the smothered pork chops that are garnished with peppers and onions. I asked for the gravy on the side.
The hardest selection with are entrees were what to select for sides. There were so many choices. I wanted the creamed spinach but it was sold out. I thought about the mac and cheese, but I did not want to disappointed if it was not good. I selected the garlic mashed potatoes and the vegetable medley. My friends selected a mixture of potato salad, mac & cheese and cabbage. All platters were sold with corn bread.
It took almost 45 minutes for our food to be ready, I had to be reminded that it was cooked to order. When my food arrived, I opened the large container. They forgot to put the gravy on the side. My two large pork chops were covered with gravy. However, I was pleased that the gravy was not overly heavy and did not swim into my mash potatoes or the vegetables. All my friends viewed there huge platters and also seem satisfied. I couldn't wait to get back to my friend's house to dig in.
On the ride back to my friends house, I am sorry to say, I started with the pineapple coconut. It was WONDERFUL. I ate half and wished I had ordered another one. I was not the only one munching. We all ate a little of something as we drove through the streets to the house. Even the driver has a nibble of something. We couldn't help it. The aroma in the car was killing us.
When we got to the house, we all just dug in. I would say for most of us, we did not even wash our hands. We savored our food and began to share. I loved my food. I was not disappointed. I was mad, however, that I did not get a side of mac and cheese. It was so delicious I ate so much of my friend's that we got into an argument. The fried shrimp were large and a little spicy. I did not try the fish, wings, jerk chicken, pancakes or the cornbread (don't like cornbread). I was told, they were delicious as well as the other desserts ordered.
Philly will always be my favorite place for steak and cheese hoagies especially from the deli around the corner from my friend's house. However, I just added another must go to in Philly - Just To Serve You Restaurant. They served me right for Saturday lunch with enough to take back to DC for lunch on Monday with all but the cake. I had to finish that off. I wish I had enough time on Sunday to stop back for another slice. But there wasn't. I will live with my memories until another time with Just To Serve You Restaurant.
